Winton Woods High School Counselor Brad Tash described junior student Tijah Griggs as someone who is “a caring, good-natured young lady who brightens up any room she enters.” Griggs was honored at the September board of education meeting with the Kiwanis Student of the Month award.
“Tijah always keeps a positive attitude, and you can always find her with a smile on her face,” said Tash. “In Tijah’s government class, there are two students who are classified as English Language Learners (ELL). Both students have been in the country for less than two years, so an 11th grade American Government course has been very difficult for them. Tijah has taken these students under her wing. She works with them in groups, explains concepts slowly and clearly so they can understand the material, while becoming a true friend to them. It is rare to see a young person display this type of altruism without even being asked.
“Aside from Tijah’s personal qualities, she is also an excellent student. She has nearly all A’s currently while maintaining a substantial extra-curricular work load. Tijah is part of the school’s a capella group, Varsity Ensemble, orchestra, and is a youth program volunteer at her church. Tijah is the perfect role model for all of her Winton Woods peers and is truly deserving of this Student of the Month award.”
