Social Skill - "Dealing with Feeling Mad"
Week of October 6-10, 2008
SOCIAL SKILLS
---
Primary North and South students (K-2) will be taught specific Social Skills each week, such as how to be good listener; being honest; asking for help etc. Topics will be sent home each week to help parents/guardians speak with your child about which skill they are learning, It will help your child, as we partner together and use the same language in addressing these social skills. Students will be recognized for applying the skills throughout the year. We realize that children must be taught appropriate social behaviors --- these do not come automatically.
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is working on the following skill this week:
DEALING WITH FEELING MAD
This is a very important skill for your child to learn. The steps of the skill are:
- Stop and think.
- Choose.
- Turtle (curl up in your shell where you can’t see the person you’re angry with).
- Relax (take deep breaths or act like you’re squeezing the angry out of your hands or oranges to make juice)
- Ask to talk (discuss with them who they can talk to).
- Do it.
Your child has been asked to complete this skill at home. Please help your child to follow these skill steps throughout this week by:
- Reminding them to use the skill when you see a time the skill could be helpful. (i.e. when you tell them they have to wait to do something and they get mad)
- Responding positively to your child’s skill use, rewarding your child’s use of the skill. (i.e. a simple “high five” can be just as rewarding as a snack or sticker)
- Asking your child to teach you (or a brother or sister) the skill. They also will be role-playing in class the different steps of each skill and so this can be a fun family activity.
If you have any questions or want more help with teaching your child this skill at home please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.
