To the parents or guardians of: Student Name
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at Winton Woods Intermediate School! I am looking forward to the upcoming school year and excited to continue working with the students, staff, parents, and communities of Forest Park, Greenhills, and Springfield Township. In collaboration with our high academic expectations at WWIS, our students also learn to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Problem Solvers to meet our high behavioral expectations. Working in collaboration and conjunction with students, parents, and communities, we strive to cultivate a world class education.
In order to ease the transition to the upcoming school year, homeroom assignments are included in this letter. We will also uphold the tradition of posting class lists on the windows at the main entrance to Winton Woods Intermediate School on Wednesday, August 11 at 12:00 p.m. for your review. We encourage you to check the updated class lists prior to the start of the year.
In addition to daily instruction in the core academics, all students will also participate in the following courses: Science Lab, Foreign Language, Technology, Physical Education, General Music, and Art. Accelerated Learning and Gifted and Talented courses are also offered to qualifying students. Enrichment and intervention is incorporated into our schedule to meet the needs of all students. Our enrichment opportunities include Band, Orchestra, and 5th Grade students also participate in, D.A.R.E., “Drug Abuse Resistance Education.” Currently, our extracurricular activities are High IQ Environmental Bowl, National Elementary Honor Society, Robotics, Sprinters, and Student Council. We encourage your child to participate and get involved in our variety of extracurricular activities.
On Monday, August 16 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. the WWIS building will be open for families to be able to meet administration, tour the building in search of their homeroom and other important locations in the building. This year WWIS is also welcoming our new Assistant Principal, Jeremy Day. Mr. Day has been teaching mathematics throughout the Winton Woods District for the past 5 years and is excited to begin his new role at WWIS.
The first day of school for our 5th grade students will be on Wednesday, August 18. This opening day will help our new 5th grade students to become more familiar with their new environment. All 5th and 6th grade students should report to school on Thursday, August 20.
Each school day students are expected to arrive at 7:50 a.m. and we will begin dismissal with walkers at 2:55, bus riders will be dismissed from 2:57-3:05, and car riders immediately following busses. A parent or guardian will need to be present to sign out car riders at the marked location on the side of the building. Staff members will be available to answer any questions and we also encourage you to contact the office with any questions.
In order to assist the students and families in becoming familiar with the new building, expectations, and the routine, we have planned an Open House and Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, August 26 from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. At that time you will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and administration. Families will be able to follow their child’s daily schedule. It is a very important opportunity for students; I strongly encourage all students and parents to attend.
The Winton Woods Intermediate School staff is dedicated to providing an educational environment that encourages participation and motivation in order to increase the academic achievement of our students. We strive to develop and maintain strong lines of communication between home and school to let our students know that we are working together in their best interests. Together we can work to help them understand the opportunities that exist for them and the importance of setting goals that will shape their futures.
Parents and students are reminded that all students are expected to complete Summer Math Packets and bring them to school completed on the first day of school. Additional copies of the packet can be picked up at WWIS. We will be having an ice cream social for all students who successful complete this assignment. We also encourage students to participate in reading for pleasure over the summer and throughout the year. The public libraries in our area are offering some great programs.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer. We look forward to meeting and working with all students and families to create a fantastic school year!
Sincerely,
Tonya West Wright
