ONLINE DATABASES ADDED TO LIBRARY COLLECTION
The WWHS library now has four online databases to assist students with homework and research. These databases are accessible via the Internet both at school and at home with a password assigned to our school. These new databases along with the e-books purchased earlier this year, plus the INFOhio databases provided by the state, provide our students with a wealth of authoritative, reliable information. All of these databases are linked from the library’s homepage. Students should see Mrs. Sisk for the passwords to access the databases. A brief description of each of the new databases is below.
Biography Resource Center integrates award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources with related full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals, as well as tens of thousands of images and links to hand-picked web sites. Search for people---both current and historic from all eras and fields of endeavor---based on name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, or gender, as well as keyword and full text. Or, combine search criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search.
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a one-stop source for information on today's hottest social issues. It features viewpoint articles, topic overviews, full-text magazine, academic journal, and newspaper articles, primary source documents, statistics, images and podcasts, and links to Websites. A few of the many topics covered are Biological Weapons, Capital Punishment, Global Warming, Gun Control, Health Care Reform, Media Violence, and Stem Cells.
Student Resource Center - Gold offers easy access to award-winning content based on national curriculum standards. Covering all core curriculum areas, including history, literature, science, social studies, and more, SRC - Gold provides a premium selection of reference material, more than 1,100 full-text periodicals and newspapers, primary sources, creative works, and multimedia, including hours of video and audio clips and podcasts. Premier reference content includes the American Journey Series, American Decades, Career Information Center and the SRC Health Module.
Lit Finder for Schools provides the opportunity for complete appreciation and study of great literary works by offering access to 126,500 full-text poems, 5,000 stories, 1,000 plays, 2,800 essays, 1,800 speeches and more. It is international is scope and covers all time periods. Additional content includes biographies, work summaries, photographs, and a glossary. A subject navigator, including a Kid's Korner that lists subjects of interests to students, provides over 10,000 subject headings. Basic and advanced search modes allow students to search by keyword, author, subject, work title, work date, nationality, gender, timeline, and more. Users can find everything from the sonnets of Shakespeare to the poetry of Maya Angelou, the love poetry of the 13th century to contemporary poems by African American women, the inaugural speeches of George Washington through George W. Bush, short stories by Edgar Allan Poe to stories by up-and-coming writer Elizabeth Weld, or essays on such subjects as the arts, science, and religion.
