Department Information

The Winton Woods City School’s Orchestras actively perform throughout the community and have achieved success at the state level in adjudicated events. Orchestra players have numerous additional opportunities in the form of select ensembles such as our Winton Woods Chamber Orchestra and Winton Woods Fiddlers. Both groups perform in concert, and out in the Cincinnati community at large. The Fiddlers performed for the Public Schools-Public Pride Exposition at the Cincinnati Convention Center for an audience of educators from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and performed at the Tall Stacks Music, Arts and Heritage Festival in October, 2003 and most recently October, 2006. Also, Winton Woods Orchestras hold national awards for competition performances in places such as Orlando, Florida; Williamsburg, Virginia; and New York, New York. The group traveled to participate in a national competition in Atlanta in the Spring of 2007 and placed second overall among orchestras winning a Silver medal as well as the Clinician Award .

The Winton Woods High School Orchestra and Middle School Orchestra, under the direction ofDr. Santangelo, are performing ensembles that actively participate in events sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association. Individual members have auditioned for and participated in outside ensembles such as Blue Ash Youth Symphony and the Winton Woods High School Orchestra’s concert master, Just Hisle, recently performed with the Southwest Regional Orchestra. This orchestra is an auditioned group of the top student string players from the greater Cincinnati and Dayton Areas. This marks the second consecutive year that a member from the group has had this honor.

Dr. Santangelo joined the Winton Woods music staff in July of 2008.  She recently received her DMA in orchestral conducting from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Dr. Mark Gibson.  While a student at CCM she served as a conducting assistant for Maestro Pavo Jarvi, Erich Kunzel and Eric Dudley of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.  She is the Resident Conductor for the Starling Showcase Orchestra and is a Staff Conductor for the Great Wall International Music Academy in Beijing, China since 2007.  This past year she also appeared as a Guest Conductor with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia.
