JUNIOR GERALYN SMITH IS JANUARY'S GOLD STAR STUDENT

According to Winton Woods High School Counselor Christina Jeranek, junior Geralyn Smith has been a high achieving student for quite some time. “Geralyn has been actively involved in her academics and has challenged herself by taking honors and, beginning this year, some AP classes as well,” said Jeranek. “Not only is she academically talented, she is also a role model to our students and staff.” Smith was honored at the district’s January board of education meeting with the Kiwanis Gold Star Student of the Month award.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS HONORED FOR TRUSTWORTHINESS

As difficult as junior high school can be, Winton Woods Middle School eighth grader Wilibel Serrano seems to be successfully navigating his academics and extra-curricular activities with responsibility, integrity and trustworthiness. “Whatever Wilibel is asked to do, the follow through is guaranteed,” said WWMS Principal Doug Sanker. “He is the type of student any teacher would find helpful. They have confidence that he will do what is asked with no extra monitoring needed.” Serrano was honored at the district’s January board of education meeting with the Kiwanis Character is Key Award for trustworthiness.

BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTS NEW OFFICERS

Jessica Miranda, a member of the Winton Woods Board of Education since 2014, was re-elected board president at the organizational meeting on Tuesday, January 5. Board member Dr. Viola Johnson, who has also served since 2014, was elected vice-president.

DR. BRANDON WIERS HONORED WITH COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD

Dr. Brandon Wiers was honored at Winton Woods City Schools’ January board of education meeting with the district’s Community Spirit Award for his longtime service to the district. Wiers, who served on the board of education from 2010-2012, has since formed a group called “Concerned Citizens for Improved Schools,” along with George Wharton and Chip Henderson, to assist district leadership in assessing progress toward its student achievement goals.
