ESL
English as a Second Language
The ESL or English as a Second Language component of the Department of Teaching and Learning is responsible for providing students from non-English backgrounds assistance in developing the English language skills needed to participate effectively in Ohio's classrooms and meet state academic standards. The ESL instructors serve kindergarten through grade 12 students both in the classroom and in resource rooms to guide the students using both the Ohio English Language Proficiency Standards for Limited English Proficient Students in Grades K-12 as well as the state K-12 English/Language Arts Academic Content Standards. The ESL component provides support for the parents, classroom teachers and administration through a variety of professional development, materials, testing, and consultation. The ESL program has a process for monitoring the progress of students on a regular basis and takes steps to modify the program if students are not making reasonable progress.
