District News:

• There will be no school on Friday, January 18 for students K – 6 for a staff in-service.

• There will be no school on Monday, January 21 for students Pre-K – 12 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.


Winton Woods High School News:

• Seven Winton Woods High School band students will be traveling to Northern Kentucky University on Friday, January 18 and Saturday, January 19 for the inaugural Tri-State Band Symposium.  This two-day event ends with a concert Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. These first and second chair players were nominated by band teachers Dani Ashbrook and Kim Ohlweiler and then accepted by NKU. They are:

  Kyle Day - bassoon
  Evan Schultz - bassoon
  Megan Hein - trumpet
  Corey Stewart - trombone
  Tyler Lendl - tuba
  Michael Day - percussion
  Jay Jordan – percussion

 
• Winton Woods High School Sports Marketing students walked away with nine DECA Diamond Trophies for first through third place winners at the sixth annual Great Oaks DECA Mini Spring Competition on the Scarlet Oaks Career and Development Campus on December 14, 2007.

Over 100 marketing students from five area high schools competed in nine marketing events. Participating schools included: Sycamore High School, Anderson High School, Diamond Oaks Career Development Campus, Live Oaks Career Development Campus, and Winton Woods High School.

Winton Woods Sports Marketing students who won first place were:
• Brian Davis in Marketing Management
• Steven Cleary and Cherish Smith in Sports and Entertainment Marketing
• Jason Doan in Automotive Services
• Dan Clark in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Individual.

Winton Woods Sports Marketing students who won second place were:
• Ellie Nightingale and Ariana Sanders in Travel and Tourism Marketing
• Antonio Etter and Andrew Finnerson in Sports and Entertainment Marketing.

Winton Woods Sports Marketing students who won fourth place were:
• Ashley Weihe in Retail Marketing
• Brianna Davis and Chiamaka Okwumo in Hospitality Services Marketing
• Roderick Fitzgerald and Mitchell Williams in Sports and Entertainment Marketing.

Winton Woods Sports Marketing students who won fifth place were:
• Noleena Booker and Jennifer Rowell in Hospitality Services Marketing.

All competitors took a 100 question multiple-choice test on marketing concepts and had to perform an impromptu role play situation that dealt with either human relations problem-solving, selling, promotion, economic concepts, management decision-making, pricing, product development, planning marketing strategies, customer service problem-solving or a combination of the above. 

The DECA District 4 Spring Competition will take place at Miami Middletown campus on February 12. Over 200 students from seven different marketing chapters will compete at this event. 

DECA is an association of high school marketing students who are pursing careers in marketing and management. Ohio DECA has 5,295 members with 190 chapters, and National DECA has a total of 170,000 student members for the High School Division.

• Four Winton Woods High School orchestra students have been asked to perform at the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Conference in Cincinnati on February 7. “This performance will be part of Gayley Hautzenroeder's clinic on Adjudicated Events,” said Winton Woods Orchestra Director Jonathan Welch. Hautzenroeder is a staff member with the music department at Miami University and former orchestra director for Northwest High School.

Winton Woods High School quartet members are Justin Hisle (violin), Malcolm Thompson (violin), Patrick Kelly (viola) and Marika Gonther (cello). The group will perform at 5:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Cincinnati.


Winton Woods Intermediate News:

• Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, January 23. 
    
• Valentine’s Day parties will be Thursday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m.

• Parents are needed to assist with the Camp Campbell Gard trip for fifth graders from March 10-12.  Please contact Mrs. Marsha Myers or Mrs. Janet Smith if you can volunteer.

• The specials schedule will change on Tuesday, January 22.  Students will continue to take technology one day throughout the entire year.  However; students currently in Art and Music will begin Physical Education and Spanish on the first day of the second semester.  In contrast, students who have spent the first semester in Physical Education and Spanish will begin Art and Music.  Homeroom teachers will assist the students with this transition.   

• Parent conferences are Thursday, January 31 from 5:00 - 8:25 p.m. or on Friday, February 1 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Teachers will send home notification about these dates over the next two weeks.  If you have questions, please contact the office. 

• Students will not have school on Friday, January 18.  Teachers will participate in professional development.

• Congratulations to the following December Students of the Month: Sydney Reid, Alexandria Hinkston, Ashley McCartney, Selena Rodriguez, Jerrel Foster, Kyle Jackson, and Heather Hohweiler.  These students will receive a mesh Warrior backpack in addition to participating in the Student of the Month Luncheon with the principal on Thursday, January 17.

• Winton Woods Intermediate School continues to honor our Warriors of the Week.  The following students were selected as Warriors of the Week during the week of January 7-11:  Jyrell Thomas, Solomon Smith, Auna’y Miller, Will Tekulve, Matthew Mester, Kat Rocklin, Neshelle Wright, Stormy Caudill, Breyana Haynes, and Tenishia Thurmond.   


Winton Woods Elementary News:

• Family Math & Science Night is on Thursday, January 17 from 6:30 - to 8:00 p.m.  There will be 20 different math and science activities to experience.  Free childcare will be provided from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. for children ages 1 to 8 years.  Snacks and beverages will also be available that evening for the kids. You should have already received a flyer with more information about this great night of fun and learning.   Please call the WWES main office if you have any questions at 619-2490 and plan on joining us for this event. 

• Parent-Teacher conferences are Thursday, January 31 from 5:00 - 8:25 p.m. and Friday, February 1 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  There will be no school for students on Friday, February 1.  Please use the Parent-Teacher conference forms sent home with your child to schedule a conference with your child's teacher. 

Also, parents of fourth grade students who are interested in attending our special Fourth Grade Team 4-III Open House & Meet the Teacher Night are invited to attend on Thursday, January 31 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Parents will have the opportunity to meet their child's new teacher(s)—Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Mehta, Mrs. Snellgrove or Mr. Bailey. This event will take place in rooms 101, 104, 105 and 111.

• The January Dad's Club is this Saturday, January 19 from noon - 2:30 p.m. We'll be bowling this time, so come on out! Remember that any significant adult male figure in the life of one of our students is welcome to attend.  If you are a WWES parent, you should have already received a flyer detailing further information. We look forward to seeing you there! 


Winton Woods Primary News:

• All Primary South students will be participating in a PTA-sponsored program this week and early next week.  The program is called Wise About Eyes.  Each class will work with volunteers to learn about their eyes. 

• To celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, students are making people cut outs with how we are alike lists on them.  These will be hung in our hallways.

• Mad Science came to Primary North this week with exciting science activities for our students!  Parents also attended the assembly to learn about the upcoming after-school program for our students.  Mad Science will also be visiting Primary South this month, so look for a flyer to be sent home.  Please visit the Mad Science website at www.madscience.org/Cincinnati to learn more about this program.  Registration forms for this after-school program are available in the Primary North and Primary South offices. 
 
• Parent Reminder:  Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled Thursday, January 31 from 5:00-8:25 p.m. and Friday, February 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  There will be no school for students K-6 on Friday, February 1 due to conferences.  School will also be closed on Monday, January 21 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
 
• The Primary Schools would like to thank all the parent volunteers who helped make the classroom Christmas parties so special, filled with goodies and games for everyone.  The students had a great time!
