Winton Woods District Honors Vets with Annual Hall of Heroes
The annual Hall of Heroes open house in the Winton Woods School District is a day to learn about history and to honor those men and women of the military who made that history happen. This is the seventh annual Hall of Heroes event, and it will be held in a new location at the Greenhills Community Building on Saturday, December 6 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The title of this year’s open house is “Nazi Concentration Camps.”
The Hall of Heroes is the creation of retired Winton Woods fifth grade teacher Glenn Grundei. It is a permanent display of photos, newspapers, and memorabilia that tells the story of every war since World War I. It is also Grundei’s way of thanking members of the military for being modern day heroes.
The guest speaker for this year’s Hall of Heroes is Saul Marmer, a World War II veteran who visited the German concentration camp of Dachau in 1945 and has visited several other concentration camps since then. Mr. Marmer will be returning to Germany at the request of the German government on December 8 to participate in a program there.
Displays at this year’s event will include:
- World War II Women’s Army Corp (WAC) - Dr. Lynn Ashley
- World War II Navy Nurses - Bonnie Rost
- Korean War Veterans - Bob McGeorge
- Military Memorabilia – Dusty and Dakota White
- Military Memorabilia - Delhi Veterans
“This year’s Hall of Heroes event is dedicated to the memory of veterans Al Rost and Chester Ryba,” said Grundei.
The Hall of Heroes Open House is a free event and is open to the public. It will be held on Saturday, December 6 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Greenhills Community Building located at 8 Enfield Drive in Greenhills.
