World Affairs Museum
This year’s World Affairs Museum at Winton Woods High School will address the topic, The Rights of Women Around the World. To choose a theme for the museum, World Affairs teacher Lauren Sabour said her class “brainstorms ideas together and takes a vote. We look for themes that have many options for exhibits, that are interesting, and that have many unknown issues.”
The topic of the rights of women “was overwhelmingly supported by the World Affairs students this year, and they have created some wonderful, creative, interactive exhibits,” said Sabour. “Some of our inspirations came from the new book by Nick Kristof called Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.” The book is a call to arms against what is described as our era's most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women in the developing world.
The World Affairs Museum will be open in the Winton Woods High School library on Tuesday, March 2 and Wednesday, March 3 during the school day, as well as during the evening of March 2 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Exhibits this year include topics such as female infanticide, bride burning, acid attacks, success stories, and how to help.
