Rocks Around

by Phil Bretz last modified Sunday, December 16

Project 1

 “Rocks Around”

Overall Objective:  The students will research rocks and minerals using sites of their choice.  They will gain an understanding of how rocks and minerals are constantly changing thanks to the process of heat, pressure and erosion. Working in small groups students will create and design a model that represents the rock cycle and that illustrates how rocks are formed and classified. The groups will design their own rock, identifying its characteristics specifically its color, texture and minerals incorporated.

Questions to Research:

What is the rock cycle?

What are rocks made of?

What is a mineral?

How are minerals classified?

What are the three types of rocks?

How are each type created?

What are some examples of each of the types of rocks?

How do rocks change?

Product:  The groups will create a PowerPoint Slide Show, that illustrates the Rock Cycle. The slide show will include a drawing of the rock that they created clearly identifying its characteristics. The drawing will be done on paper and then scanned into the slide show. With teachers permission, students may choose another medium that illustrates the same information.
