STUDENTS ADVANCE TO FINALS IN SPELLEBRITY VIDEO CONTEST

After thousands of votes were counted, Nico Prentosito and Nathan Washam were among the five finalists in the Spellebrity Video Contest and will be traveling to Washington, D.C. in May for the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The contest—sponsored by Kindle and Scripps—asked students to produce a video that spelled out ways to kindle a love of reading. It was launched in March as part of National Reading Month.

ARTISTS REACHING CLASSROOMS PROGRAM RECEIVES COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD

The Artists Reaching Classrooms Program through the Taft Museum has provided multiple learning experiences and opportunities for Winton Woods High School students since its partnership with the school district began back in the 1990s. Lisa Morrisette, manager of school and docent programs for the Taft Museum, was presented with the district’s April Community Spirit award for the opportunities that the Artists Reaching Classrooms program has brought to Winton Woods High School.

SECOND GRADER HONORED FOR INTEGRITY

Nyla Freeman is one of the reasons why second grade teacher Jahquil Hargrove loves his job. Freeman’s interactions with her peers, leadership qualities in the classroom, and participation in class discussions all show Hargrove that she has a strong personality and work ethic. At his recommendation, Freeman was honored at Winton Woods’ April board of education meeting by the Greenhills/Forest Park Kiwanis Club with the Kiwanis Character is Key award for integrity.

STUDENT OVERCOMES OBSTACLES TO BE GOLD STAR STUDENT

Sophomore Gerald Taylor had surgery in the middle of his freshman year at Winton Woods High School that left him lying flat on his back for weeks. Despite that obstacle, he managed to complete his assignments and maintain an A average. “Gerald is a tenth grader who strives for excellence,” said his counselor Kim Goins. Taylor was honored as the Gold Star-Kiwanis Student of the Month at the April board of education meeting.
